Images On WebsitesObviously a great photo about your product is a strong selling tool for people looking at your page. It is one thing to describe a log home, but a beautiful photo hammers your selling points home and gives the viewer the added stimulation to complete their mind picture.
A properly named photo can send traffic to your site. What most people don’t realize is that an image that is named purposefully is a powerful SEO tactic that can drive traffic…for free! As an example, one of the domains we own as an example is in a niche, which is about as obscure as you can find…www.totem-pole.net. We created about 4-5 pages. Usually when we acquire a new domain, we build a few pages and optimize the site and let it age. This site had no links pointing toward it, was never promoted in any way, and for the first two years it averaged about one visitor per week. While reviewing our traffic logs one day, we began to notice that serious traffic was hitting this site every day. We couldn’t imagine why! After much investigation, we discovered that Google was featuring two of the images from our website on their search results pages for the term “totem poles.” These images were driving 200 to 800 visitors to our site every day! The reason is because Google understood the “filenames” of these images. The images are named totem_poles.jpg and totem_pole_3.jpg. By naming these files using descriptive keywords, Google was able to determine that these must be photos of totem poles. Merely renaming an image can often drive traffic to a website. Next, read how we teach Google to ‘see’ our images.
